The Chatfield boys’ basketball team only had one game last week, but the weather didn’t allow the team any practice time either.

In the only game last week when school was in session just one day, the Gophers fell 49-65 Thursday at Plainview-Elgin-Millville.

“We had a tough one in Plainview last night. Going into the game without any practices in over a week we looked a little rusty and a little flat,” said coach Jeff DeBuhr. “On the defensive end it took us a while to adjust back to game speed but our defense improved greatly as the game went on.  We made a nice run in the second half, cutting the lead to five, but couldn’t sustain our run.  We missed a lot of easy shots we usually make but that is expected when some of the players hadn’t touched a ball in six days.  Hopefully the weather cooperates going forward as our schedule is getting pretty packed.”

The layoff showed in the team stats too.  Chatfield shot 38.2 percent (21/55) from the field and just 11.1 percent (1/9) from three-point range.  At the free throw line the Gophers hit just six of 13, 46.2 percent.

The Gophers were led in scoring by Reid Johnson and Josef Fahrenholtz, each coming up with 16 points.  Johnson hit six of his 11 shots (54.5%) and Fahrenholtz was seven for 16 (43.8%).  At the free throw line, Johnson was three for six and Fahrenholtz connected on two of three.  Johnson also hit one of two from three-point range.

David Castleberg was also in double-figures with 10 points, connecting on five of his nine attempts (55.6%).  Seth Allen, Ben Brogan, and Chance Backer each had single baskets for two points each and Jack Tuohy had a free throw for one point.

In the rebounding department, Fahrenholtz led the team with eight, with four each for Brogan and Castleberg and three each for Johnson and Bacer.  Allen and Fahrenholtz each had two assists. Fahrenholtz led the team with four steals, Landon Bance had three, and Johnson and Brogan each had two.

Chatfield trailed at the half, 34-20.

Here’s the game schedule for the next two weeks, including any make-up dates.  Monday, Feb. 4, Chatfield was scheduled to be at Kingsland; Friday, Feb. 8, Southland at Chatfield; Saturday, Feb. 9, Chatfield at Cannon Falls (part of a girls/boys double-header); Monday, Feb. 11, Pine Island at Chatfield; Tuesday, Feb. 12, Cotter at Chatfield; Friday, Feb. 15, Chatfield at Dover-Eyota; Saturday, Feb. 16, St. Charles at Chatfield (3:30 p.m.) and Tuesday, Feb. 19, Wabasha-Kellogg at Chatfield.
