Two more Spring Valley-Wykoff FFA career development event (CDE) teams are advancing to state competition in late April after placing first in region competition.

The nursery and landscape team attended the region competition in Rochester on March 26, where the team placed first. Individually, Elise O’Connor placed first, Emily Miner placed sixth, Ashley McNamara placed seventh and Shelby Beck placed 13th.

The nursery/landscape CDE tests students’ skills in maintaining landscape plants and related products, evaluating equipment and services and performing landscape design. Members complete a written exam, identify various nursery plants, judge plant materials and landscape plans and complete practicums in the landscaping area.

The floriculture team consisting of Rachel Hansen, Nora Jahn, Jenna Schmidt and Lydia Voeltz also placed first at the region competition. Individually, Hansen placed first, Jahn placed fourth and Schmidt placed seventh. The team will be attending the state competition in April as well.

In the floriculture CDE, members demonstrate proficiency in plant identification, judging plants and arrangements and skills that include either constructing a bud vase, corsage or floral arrangement. A written exam is also a part of the event.

The Minnesota state FFA convention will be held April 28 to 30, at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities.
