Three candidates seeking District 3 commissioner seat

The field is set with three candidates seeking the Fillmore County District 3 commissioner seat, setting up a primary election May 14 and a special election Aug. 13.

Kevin Beck of Spring Valley, Jordan Fontenello of York Township, near Greenleafton, and Larry Hindt of Spring Valley had filed for the open seat. Filing ended Tuesday, March 19.

The three are seeking to fill the vacant seat held by Gary Peterson, who resigned Jan. 17 in the middle of his term. The winning candidate would serve the remainder of Peterson’s term, which ends Dec. 31, 2020.

The primary election on Tuesday, May 14, will narrow the field down to two candidates. The general election is Tuesday, Aug. 13. State statute requires a special election to fill a vacancy if there is more than a year left in the term.

Beck came to Spring Valley 23 years ago when he entered law enforcement, starting in Spring Valley, then serving as emergency management director, assistant jail administrator and chief deputy in Fillmore County. He has been a member of the Spring Valley Fire Department for 20 years.

Fontenello grew up in the Spring Valley area and joined the Minnesota Army National Guard during his junior year in high school. He returned to Fillmore County in 2000 and is currently customer service manager at Walmart in Austin.

Hindt, who grew up outside of LeRoy, is employed at Olmsted Medical Center in Spring Valley as the branch clinic radiology coordinator, operates a lawn care and snow removal business and assists his son with a family farm. He has lived in Fillmore County 43 years.

District 3 covers the cities of Spring Valley and Ostrander as well as the townships of Beaver, Bloomfield, Forestville and York.
