Josh and Stephanie Dahl to be honored as area finalists at state Soil and Water Conservation District Convention

The Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD) has named the Dahl family of rural Rushford as one of eight state finalists in the 2018 Outstanding Conservationist Award Program.

Josh and Stephanie will be recognized at a Dec. 11 luncheon at MASWCD’s 82nd annual convention in Bloomington as the Area 7 winner.

The awards program recognizes farm families, individuals, conservation organizations and other groups for their accomplishments in implementing conservation practices and improving Minnesota’s natural resources.

Of the eight finalists, one will be announced as the State’s Outstanding Conservationist of the Year at the Dec. 11 luncheon.

Matt Feldmeier, chairman of the District Board of Supervisors along with the other supervisors from the Root River SWCD nominated the Dahls for all their conservation efforts in the last year.

The supervisors are proud of the Dahls for what they’ve done in conserving the natural resources of the area.  They felt the nomination was an excellent way to recognize the Dahls for the work they’ve done locally, in the name of conservation.

Bob Scanlan, assistant manager of the Root River SWCD said, “The award is recognition for the numerous conservation projects established by the Dahls in the last year”.

Josh and Stephanie own and operate a 150 cow dairy along with young stock on 420 ridge-top acres located directly upstream of Bridge Creek in Yucatan Township of Houston County.  Conservation practices installed and managed on their farm include contour strip farming, a couple miles of waterway, several water and sediment control basins, critical area plantings and grade stabilization structures.

In addition, the Dahls eliminated an open lot while constructing heifer and calf confinement barns.

The manure is contained and managed in a newly constructed concrete manure holding basin. Manure containment allows the Dahls to better manage the nutrients produced on their dairy operation.

It is through a comprehensive conservation effort that Dahls have become a great example of stewardship.
