The Chatfield Gophers matched up against their third Class AAA opponent last Friday, and for the third time, came away with a victory.  The latest foe was Lake City, and the score was 28-6.

The Gophers are now 4-2 for the season and remain 1-2 against opponents in Section 1AA.

Chatfield scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter, a 36-yard run by Sam Backer and an 85-yard pass from Reid Johnson to the “elder” Backer, Chance.  AJ Karver kicked both the PATs and the Gophers went into the locker room at halftime with a 14-0 lead.

Sam Backer scored his second TD on a 66-yard run in the third quarter and Johnson had a one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter to round out the Gopher scoring.  Again, both kicks were good by AJ Karver.

Lake City would get on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, but after the Gophers had the game well in-hand.

Young Backer would finish the game with 153 rushing yards on 20 carries and the two touchdowns.  Ben Roline finished the game with nearly 10 yards per carry, rushing three times for 29 yards.

Chance Backer would finish the game with 135 receiving yards, on four catches, and one touchdown.  Masyn Remme also had four catches for 30 yards and Max Aug had two receptions for 33 yards.  Reid Johnson was 10 for 18 in passing for 198 yards along with one TD and 2 interceptions.

This was a very balanced offensive game for the Gophers, 198 yards passing and 168 yards of rushing yardage.

Lake City, on the other hand, was pass crazy, tossing 47 passes through the air.  The team came up with 221 yards through the air, but Chatfield would also pick off three of them.  Coming up with the Gopher interceptions were Tate Karver, Nate Bernard and Sam Backer.  And regarding take-aways, Sam Backer also had a fumble recovery.
