Gopher gals go 3-2 before end of regular season this week

The Chatfield softball team had five games this week, with three wins (St. Charles, 9-2; PEM, 12-2 and St. Charles, 6-2) and losing two (PEM, 3-6 and Coon Rapids, 7-5).

The team’s current record is 10-4, 9-2 in the Three Rivers Conference.

Tuesday the team hosts Southland for a double-header. Thursday the Gophers host Wabasha-Kellogg and Saturday they have two games at home against La Crescent-Hokah at 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m. against Dover-Eyota.

The sub-section tournament starts next week. The sub-section/section brackets will be on the high school league website as soon as they are available.

Chatfield got a pair of wins over St. Charles last week, four days apart. This game on Monday was pretty much over after the five-run second inning.

Lexi Chase was in the circle for all seven innings. She gave up eight hits, two unearned runs and one walk, while striking out 10.

In that second inning, Chatfield batted a round (nine batters). Contributing in the second were Carlie Berge (single), McKenna Daniels (reached on an error), Katie Ihrke (fielder’s choice), Chase (walk), Teagan Allen (double), Belle Berg (double) and Alanna Goetzinger (reached on an error).

Chase led the team with three hits. Allen and Belle Berg followed with two each and Berge, Ihrke and Abby Nosbisch each batted one. Runs-batted-in were recorded by Chase, Allen (3), Belle Berg (2) and Nosbisch.

The gals lost the first game of the double-header against Plainview-Elgin-Millville. Chatfield left seven runners on the bases and committed four errors.

Berge pitched the game and suffered the loss for the Lady Gophers. She allowed eight hits, six runs, five earned, no walks and struck out nine, although there was some question about the stats.

Berge led the team with two hits, and one each were achieved by Chase, Allen, Belle Berg, Goetzinger, Ihrke and Nosbisch. The RBI were credited to Belle Berg, Ihrke and Nosbisch. Scoring the runs were Berge, Ihrke and Nosbisch. Good contribution from the bottom of the batting order.

The second game against PEM only went six innings. Chase is credited with the win, pitching all six innings. She allowed two hits and two unearned runs, walked two and struck out 12.

Berge led the offense again with three hits and three runs scored. Coming up with two hits each were Chase, Belle Berg, Daniels and Ihrke and one hit for Peyton Berg. Knocking the runs in were Chase (2), Peyton Berg, Daniels (2), Ihrke and Nosbisch (3).

Peyton Berg led the offense with three hits, in the second win-of-the-week over St. Charles. She also had three runs-batted-in. Goetzinger contributed two hits and one each for Chase, Belle Berg, Ihrke and Nosbisch.

Chase pitched seven innings for the win. She gave up four hits, two unearned runs, no walks and struck out eight.

Saturday the Lady Gophers traveled to the Twin Cities, scheduled to play two games. The game with North St. Paul has been postponed, likely cancelled in the end, but the game with Coon Rapids was played.

The Chatfield hitting sticks were in full force as they came up with a dozen hits: two each for Belle Berg, Peyton Berg, Berge and one each for Chase, Allen, Goetzinger, Daniels, Ihrke and Nosbisch. Peyton Berg had a two-run homer in the third inning. Daniels also had two RBI and Chase had one.

Chase pitched the first five innings, allowing 10 hits, six runs, all earned. She struck out five and walked one. Berge pitched the last inning, allowing one hit, one unearned run, no walks and no strikeouts.
