Girls drop two with six regular season games left

This past week the Chatfield girls’ basketball team lost to Plainview-Elgin-Millville 49-44 and Stewartville 85-35 as winter weather postponed another game. 

With the two losses the team is now 4-16 for the season, 3-9 in Three Rivers Conference play.  The team is 2-3 against teams in the East division and will play a make-up game against Cotter on Feb. 11.

In the loss to the Lady Bulldogs, Alanna Goetzinger connected for a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.  She also had an assist.  Tessa McMahon led the team in scoring with 11 points.

“We competed and had our chances,” said coach Brian Baum.  “We did some good things against a team that has been playing well. They lost to Cotter by only three points.  The turnovers did us in.  We had 22, they had 12.  There’s the difference between winning and losing.”

Alyssa Baum had a “two-fer” night. going two “fer” two on her field goals and her free throws, for a total of six points.  Mollie Henry also had six points, going three for four at the free throw line.  Shelby Isensee contributed five points, with four for Kaci Goldsmith and two for Peyton Berg.

Isensee added five rebounds, one steal and one assist to her stats, Silja Erickson had four rebounds, an assist and a steal, Henry had one rebound, two steals (team-high) and three assists (team-high), Berg had two rebounds, a steal and an assist, Sarah Baum had two rebounds and an assist, McMahon had one rebound, one steal and one assist, Goldsmith added a rebound and an assist, and Paige Erickson pulled down a rebound. 

Midway through the first half, Chatfield trailed Stewartville by just two points, 16-14, but then the Lady Tigers applied some full-court pressure and the turnovers took their toll once again.  Unofficially, the Lady Gophers had 32 turnovers in the game.

Goetzinger led the team in scoring with 10 points, including two of four from the free throw line.  Also scoring were McMahon (four), Henry (three), Isensee (two), Silja Erickson (five), Berg (two), Goldsmith (two), Alyssa Baum (three) and Lauren Cole (four). 

During the course of the game, coach Baum played four freshman, three sophomores, two juniors and four seniors.

There are just six games left in the regular season.  Here is the remaining schedule: Monday, Feb. 4, Kingsland was scheduled to be at Chatfield; Friday, Feb. 8, Chatfield at Southland; Saturday, Feb. 9, Chatfield at Cannon Falls (6 p.m., part of a girls/boys double-header); Monday, Feb. 11, Chatfield at Cotter; Friday, Feb. 15, Dover-Eyota at Chatfield; and Saturday, Feb. 16, Chatfield at St. Charles (2:15 p.m.).
