The Mabel-Canton football team picked up a Homecoming win over Lyle/Pacelli on Friday night 36-26. The Cougars upped their record to 3-2 overall (2-2 East), thanks in part to a strong ground game and efficient passing attack. Gavin Johnson rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns along with three two-point conversions as M-C celebrated Homecoming.

The game was not as close as the final 36-26 score might indicate. The Cougars led 36-0 after three quarters before the Athletics scored 26 points in the fourth period, mostly the L/P starters against M-C reserves. The Athletics scored two touchdowns in the final 1:39 of the game with the Cougars taking a knee three times before punting in between the two L/P scores.

Overall, M-C outgained the Athletics 436 yards to 269, but the Cougars defense was stout. M-C limited L/P (0-5) to only one first down and 10 yards of offense in the first half when the outcome was decided.

The Cougars led 30-0 at halftime despite three turnovers in their first four possessions. After an interception on its second play of the game, M-C drove 54 yards before losing a fumble at the L/P 16.

However, a 40-yard Drew Wyffels pass to Ethan Underbakke set up Johnson's one-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead.

After losing another fumble at the L/P 19, M-C would score on their next three possessions. Wyffels capped a 44-yard drive with a 3-yard TD run. Johnson closed a 52-yard march with a six-yard scoring run.

Just one play after Johnson picked off an L/P pass, Wyffels hit Ryan Kuhn with a 35-yard TD toss shortly before halftime.

Later on, in the third quarter, Wyffels threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Loppnow to make it 36-0 only two minutes into the second half.

Overall, Wyffels was very efficient, completing six of only seven passes for 136 yards. Two of the five plays that covered more than 20 yards came through the air.

While limited to only 2.9 yards per handoff, L/P gained most of its yardage with the pass. Sophomore quarterback Jed Nelson completed eight of 19 passes for 184 yards and all four L/P touchdowns - 47 and 34-yard TD tosses to Bryce Strouf, plus nine and 59-yard scoring passes to sophomore Zach Bollingberg.

Nelson was also intercepted once by Johnson and was sacked three times. Loppnow had a pair of solo sacks with the third shared by Brandon Schneider and Dawson Wilder. Schneider also fell on an L/P fumble.

M-C has won all 15 games against L/P and extended the current Athletic losing streak to 24 games.

The level of competition steps up quite a bit on Friday night, Oct. 5, when the Cougars head to Grand Meadow (4-1, 3-1 sub-district). The Superlarks only loss was to Houston (32-22) back on Sept. 7.
