Baseball team enters final week of regular season

This past week the Chatfield baseball team won one game and lost three. The team now has a record of 6-8, 4-7 in Three Rivers Conference play.

Last Monday the guys lost to Dover-Eyota 5-2. On Tuesday they lost to Plainview-Elgin-Millville 5-3, in eight innings. Friday they downed St. Charles, 6-4. On Saturday they lost to Rochester Lourdes 10-0 in five innings. The game scheduled with Caledonia has been cancelled.

The Gophers gave up four runs in the fourth inning in the loss to D-E. Three Chatfield errors, two doubles and a walk led to the Eagles four runs.

Chatfield scored one run in the third inning on a walk (Hunter Johnston), a single (Seth Allen) and a wild pitch. The Gophers scored their other run in the fifth inning on two walks (Johnston, Austin Storm), a wild pitch, a ground out (Allen, fielder’s choice) and a sacrifice fly (Lincoln Salisbury). Chatfield left nine runners on the base paths.

Henry Gathje led the team with two hits. Zach Roline (double) and Allen had the other Gopher hits. Johnston scored both of Chatfield’s runs. Salisbury was credited with an RBI.

Allen was credited with the Chatfield loss. He pitched six innings, allowing only four hits, five runs (one earned) and three walks, while striking out seven.

In the loss to PEM, Chatfield trailed the Bulldogs, 3-1, but tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The two runs to tie the game were a result of three singles (Salisbury, Max Aug and Gathje) and a walk to Roline.

The winning runs for PEM in the top of the eighth inning came from a solo home run, a Chatfield error and two ground outs. The Gophers went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Aug pitched the first six innings. He gave up seven hits, three runs, two earned, two walks and struck out seven. Storm pitched the last two innings and suffered the loss. He gave up two hits, two runs, one earned. He didn’t have any walks or strikeouts.

Chatfield had five hits in the game, two by Aug and one each for Salisbury, Gathje and Paul Griffin. Getting credit from runs-batted-in were Aug, Gathje and Storm. Scoring the Chatfield runs were Salisbury, Aug and Roline. Chatfield left eight runners on base.

Storm got the win over the Saints. He pitched five innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs, struck out two and walked one. Allen got the save. He pitched two innings of relief, allowing two hits and one earned run, walked two and struck out two. Chatfield’s pitchers stranded nine St. Charles baserunners.

The Gophers got on the board with two runs in the first inning on a single by Allen, a walk to Aug, a single by Roline and a fielder’s choice by Gathje.

The guys also rallied for three runs in the fifth inning. Leading the charge were Tate Karver (passed ball on third strike), Tedon Zimmerman (reached on an error), Salisbury (walk), Aug (single) and Roline (RBI ground out).

Chatfield was out-hit by St. Charles 8-5. Coming up with the Gopher hits were Allen, Aug (2) and Roline (2). RBI were recorded by Aug (2), Roline (3) and Gathje. Scoring the Gopher runs were Zimmerman (2) and one each for Salisbury, Allen, Aug and Johnston.

The Gophers got a chance to play on one of the nicest fields in southeast Minnesota, Mayo Field, but couldn’t get the offense going and forgot to play defense against Lourdes. The locals could only come up with two hits and committed five errors.

The three pitchers (Roline, Gathje and Aug) only allowed five hits, but coupled with the errors, three walks and timely hits, gave up a total of 10 runs, in the five-inning affair. Roline pitched three innings, allowing just one hit, four runs (one earned), two walks and struck out two. Gathje pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing three hits, six runs, five earned and one walk. Aug pitched the last out. He gave up one hit and stuck out one.

Roline and Zimmerman had the Chatfield hits.

Chatfield finishes up the regular season this week with games on Tuesday in a doubleheader at home against Southland, on Thursday at Wabasha-Kellogg and Friday at PEM.
