Conquer the VHS dinosaurs.
This bear is wearing a "Snow Many Ruffles" scarf that citizens can make at a fundraiser workshop at the Spring Valley library on March 8.
Make a scarf snow ruffle-y, you can hardly bear it.
"We're hoping that we can buy new adult books and some new DVDs for the library, because we've removed and deleted all the VHS movies from the library's collections...VHS is a dinosaur," said Spring Valley Public Library (SVPL) Director Dianne Sikkink, draping a giant teddy bear in yards of frilly yarn, "so we're having a workshop and making scarves - our 'Snow Many Ruffles' scarves that are so easy to crochet - to help make that happen."
The library will host a ruffle scarf-making workshop on Friday, March 8, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., during which those who have crocheting skills - or those who don't - can gather their yarn together and learn how to create neck adornments, garnering proceeds that help replace the nearly-Paleolithic VHS tapes with more modern DVDs, as well as put some much-needed new adult fiction and nonfiction books on the shelves, as patrons have read as many books as they can during the library's "Hot Reads for Cold Nights" adult winter reading program and are excited to read more.
Sikkink stated that some supplies will be on hand for crocheters to use during the library's $10 scarf-making lessons. "We have a limited supply of yarn available, so if you can't find it in stores, we have some. Anyone who wants to pick a particular color should feel free to go to Michael's craft store or JoAnn Fabrics and pick out either 'Sashay' or 'Starbella' yarn that makes these scarves so pretty, and if you don't have an 'I' or a 'J' crochet hook, we can find you one." She continued, "This is something new we've decided to try since these scarves are so easy to make...just putting one loop through another, and you get a nice, ruffle-y scarf."
The library also holds an ongoing sale of withdrawn and donated books and materials to fund purchases of new books and DVDs for patrons of all ages - the selection stands on a table inside the library's front door, offering readers a chance to choose a good book for less than a dollar - as Sikkink accepts book and DVD donations for the library, compares what is in the collections and adds interesting donated tomes and movies, then places duplicate or unlikely additions on the sale table. At Christmastime, SVPL hosts a special Christmas book shop of gently used or new books from which proceeds also assist in upgrading library collections, keeping readers wrapped up in new places and plots in the SVPL reading room or at home.
The "Snow Many Ruffles" scarf workshop will take place at the Spring Valley Public Library, on Jefferson St. in Spring Valley. Cost is $10 per person. The library is open Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, contact the Spring Valley Public Library at 346-2100.
