The Spring Valley Historical Society will be holding its annual meeting, meal and program Sunday, April 21, starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Faith United Methodist Church at 617 Maple Lane.

Following a meal, the annual meeting will be held and at approximately 1:30 p.m. a program on "Iron Ore Mining in the Area" will begin. The program will be presented by Donald Oss and Mary Jo Dathe.

Oss was born and raised in Spring Valley and attended school here from 1936 to 1948. He attended Luther College and acquired a degree in physics and mathematics. He served in the U.S. Army and then enrolled in the University of Minnesota with a major in minerals engineering. He worked for the Hanna Mining Company from 1958 to 1985, working various jobs within the company. He eventually moved to Columbia, Miss., where he now lives, enjoying retirement and traveling.

Oss, who had been to the Spring Valley Hanna Mining site a few times, will help to explain the process involved in the ore mining of the area.

Dathe, former director, author and historian for the society, will present a Powerpoint presentation of pictures taken at the local site.

The public is welcome and encouraged to come hear the free iron ore mining program at 1:30 p.m., but may also attend the meal at 12:30 p.m. at a cost of $10 per person. Reservations for the meal must be made by Thursday, April 18, by calling Julie Mlinar at (507) 346-7726.
