It’s bad enough to have to open the new football season against the defending state champion (Chatfield), but to turn around and play a team that has been the powerhouse of Class AA, in the state (Caledonia), is more than any coach would want.  But, as the saying goes, “It is what it is!”

  • The Canton Men’s Softball League’s postseason tournament crown came down to regular season champion Larson Well Drilling and runner-up Steuart Labs.

     
  • Six turnovers costly against Chatfield  as Falcons drop football season opener

  • The Lanesboro/Fillmore Central boys and girls cross-country squads are already running this week as they were scheduled to participate in the Stewartville Invitational at Bear Creek Park on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

     
  • The Lanesboro gridiron squad decimated Glenville-Emmons during the Aug. 22 opener, 76-0.

     
  • The Burro volleyball team opened play at Schaeffer Academy on Thursday, Aug. 21, winning in straight sets.

     
  • Last year the Falcons finished the season with a 4-6 record, 3-5 in the Blue Division of the Southern Football Alliance (SFA). This season, in the last year of the SFA, Fillmore Central hopes to improve on that record, although it will have a tough start, traveling to Chatfield to take on the defending state champion Gophers.

     
  • LHS netters return nine

    Returning letter winners Alexis Jorgenson, Kelsey O'Koren, Olivia Haug, Claire Peterson, Cassidy Ruud, Rachel Kimball, Steph Erickson, Rachel Eversole and Olivia Rogers will lead the Burros out onto the volleyball court this year.

     
  • A sizable group of upperclassmen will bring both size and experience to the gridiron for Lanesboro this season. There are 17 returning letter winners from a team that tied for first in the SEC last fall, including seven returning starters.

     
  • Wolves wrestling team ?participates in Luther College's Team Wrestling Camp
    The Fillmore Central, Lanesboro and Mabel-Canton High School wrestling team, the Wolves, participated in the 2014 Luther College Team Wrestling Camp in Decorah. 
  • Cresco, Decorah speedways ready for double feature

    Racing fans enjoyed five classes of dirt-digging action at Cresco Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 10, as the Upper Iowa Speedway series visited that city once again.

     
  • Walk-off homer caps championship run

    With the Canton Men's Softball League championship already in the bag, Larson Well Drilling ended the regular season in dramatic fashion with Matt Erickson's walk-off home run.

     
  • Caledonia driver wins at Decorah
    John Griffin of Caledonia took the pole position in Saturday's Mod-Lites feature, then held off the field to secure his first checkered flag of the season in the Upper Iowa Speedway series. 
  • Who plays, why play nine-man football?
    An out-of-state reader unfamiliar with nine-man football has inquired about this gridiron game played in Minnesota. The nine-man variety is played by schools too small to play the standard 11-man game. 
  • Larson Well Drilling locked down at least a share of the men’s softball regular season championship while eliminating Soland Carpentry from the title chase. Steuart Lab remained alive in the race but will need an upset from fifth place Mabel Liquor in this the final week of the regular season. 
  • Rushford driver tears up the track
    Another round of competition at Cresco Speedway marked the 10th installment in the 2014 Upper Iowa Speedway series on July 27. Fans enjoyed five classes of action on a mild summer evening.
