The picturesque community of Lanesboro has received its share of state, regional and national attention in recent years. One can now add that the Root River town is in the running to be named to USA Today’s Top 10 Best Midwestern Small Towns list.

Lanesboro is one of two Minnesota cities on the USA Today’s 10 Best Reader’s Choice poll of 20 Midwestern cities with populations under 10,000. The one that gets the most votes by April 24 at 11 a.m. will win the title. Grand Marais, located on the north shore of Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota, is the other community in the Land of 10,000 Lakes that is in the running.

Lanesboro was touted for its outdoor activities and cultural attractions, including the Root River Bike Trail, historic architecture and numerous bed and breakfasts. It has a population of 754.

The poll describes Grand Marais as “one of the nation’s best art colonies” and the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

As of Tuesday morning, Grand Marais was at number one, while Lanesboro moved up from number nine to number four.
