MiEnergy Cooperative has been notified of a phone scam. A member contacted the cooperative last week after receiving a call from a person posing as an employee from Tri-County Electric Cooperative.
The caller told them that immediate payment was needed to avoid disconnection. The cooperative reminds members to not provide a credit card number or other personal information over the phone without verifying the call.
In this case, the scammer identified themselves as being from Tri-County Electric Cooperative, and the member questioned the name as Tri-County recently merged to form MiEnergy Cooperative.
Members should know that MiEnergy’s employees do not take credit card payment over the phone. Members can verify any call by hanging up and calling the cooperative directly at 1-800-432-2285.
MiEnergy Cooperative is a member-owned electric distribution cooperative and is the result of a merger between Hawkeye REC, of Cresco, Iowa and Tri-County Electric Cooperative of Rushford in 2017.
