Rushford–Peterson was well represented this year at the Tri-State Middle School Honor Band Festival, according to Jacob Olson, R-P Middle School band director.

In attendance were Thomas Ekern, a trumpet player in seventh grade, who played in a seventh- grade band with 92 other musicians.

Eighth-graders, Emma Schuster on flute and Megan Ekern and Mandee Tarras on French horn, played in an eighth-grade band of 85 members.

The day consisted of instrumental rehearsals in the morning, then a lunch of pizza followed by another hour of large group practice.

The directors in attendance gave a short concert for the students of music that they had brought to share with each other.

One more practice for the students and then a dinner of spaghetti after which they had a chance to relax before changing into their concert attire and performing a fantastic concert for very appreciative friends and relatives at 6 p.m.

It was a long day that went fast, the students had a chance to make beautiful music with kids from other schools that they would usually be in competition against instead of working toward a shared goal with.

The Tri-State Honor Band is held in Decorah Iowa, and has close to 50 schools represented from Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.
