If you’ve got a hankering for bluegrass or country music, great food, games and entertainment, circle Saturday, Sept. 16, on the calendar. The trail towns of Harmony, Preston and Fountain will be pulling out all the stops for the second week of Taste of the Trail. Country and folk artist Tom Schramm will be serenading folks stopping by in Preston and Fountain, while the Root River Jam, a three-piece bluegrass band, will be entertaining folks in Harmony.

Taste of the Trail is a three-weekend event, which has become a fall tradition for the nine communities located on the DNR’s Root River and Harmony-Preston Valley trails. It is held the second, third and fourth weekends in September.

  • Harmony community hosting benefit for injured man, family

    The Fourth of July 2017 will be a day Cory Tammel, his family and friends will never forget. On this past Independence Day, Tammel sustained very serious head trauma when he was thrown from a golf cart he was traveling in on a street in Harmony.

    To help offset the medical costs and lost wages caused by this unfortunate accident, friends and relatives of Tammel, his fiancé, Nicole Wangen, and their young son, Carter, have organized a benefit. It will be held at Wheelers Bar & Grill in Harmony on Saturday, Sept. 16, beginning at 4 p.m.

  • Traveling Civil War Trunk on display at Fillmore County History Center

    Last year, the Fillmore County History Center’s staff saw dead people.

    This year, they’re getting outright repro and trunky.

    “We’re welcoming a traveling trunk from the Minnesota Military Museum in Little Falls, Minn., and it’s got Civil War reproduction items in it,” stated Fillmore County History Center (FCHC) Director Debra Richardson.

  • Trail towns rolling out the welcome mat with Taste of the Trail

    As the days grow shorter and cooler and the trees begin to turn colors, nine communities located on the Department of Natural Resources’ State Root River Trail and Harmony-Preston Valley Trail are planning a three-weekend event, which has become a fall tradition. Food and drink, arts and crafts, music and other entertainment will be offered at the nine communities located on the trail, the second, third and fourth Saturdays in September.

    “The various communities are working hard to provide an entertaining time during this fall season,” said Wes Harding of the non-profit organization Root River Trail Towns.

  • Steam Engine Days Queen, attendants to be crowned Saturday

    As Steam Engine Days quickly approaches, six young women from the Mabel and Hesper area have chosen to be candidates for the 2017-2018 Steam Engine Days Queen.

    These young ladies will be participating in their judging and banquet events on Wednesday evening, Sept. 6, at the St. Olaf Church in Mabel. The girls will be in the Steam Engine Days parade on Saturday, Sept. 9, and coronation will be held immediately following the parade on the stage in the Steam Engine Grounds.
